Going Gluten-Free with Tea

Written By

One of the biggest health trends of the last decade has been the rise of the gluten-free diet. Once limited to people diagnosed with Celiac Disease, this nutritional change has been adopted by a large portion of the population today.

While the medical data on the dangers of gluten is still limited, and its full effects are not understood, many people are optimistic about the effect the gluten-free diet has had on their health. If you’re looking into adopting the gluten-free lifestyle, the right tea can be a reliable ally.

The Advantages of Tea and Herbal Teas

People on the gluten-free diet have to pay close attention to the foods they consume; it isn’t a matter of simply avoiding breads. Gluten-based additives can now be found in many of the foods on the market today, including soup, processed cheese, ketchup and even ice cream.

Fortunately, tea is not only naturally gluten-free, but classic and herbal teas can add a rich source of essential nutrients to your diet. Not only does this provide a tasty variety to help you spice up your menu, but it might help to fill in any gaps you have after cutting out so many common foods.

Are All Teas Safely Gluten-Free?

Sadly, there is a caveat: like many other foods, not all teas are guaranteed safe for those on the gluten-free diet. Some flavored and blended teas are made with malted barley, a sweetener that contains gluten. Others use a particular sealant for their tea bags which may also use gluten in the glue (since gluten is sticky – hence the ‘glu’ in the name).

Realistically, the amount of gluten in either case would be a minuscule fraction numbered in parts per million, very unlikely to have any negative health effects. However, if you are determined to go 100% gluten-free, you’ll want to pay careful attention to the teas you pick up and the packaging they’re in.

The Buddha Teas Gluten-Free Selection

At Buddha Teas, we’re proud to offer a broad selection of teas and herbal teas that are 100% gluten-free. Only two of our teas contain any gluten:

  • Oat Straw Tea: Although oats do not naturally contain gluten, they are often grown on the same farms and processed on the same machinery as wheat and other grains. This may lead to cross-contamination.
  • Dark Roast Yerba Maté: This roasted South American tea features a blend of several ingredients for a rich, flavorful tea. One of these ingredients is roasted barley, one of the grains known to contain gluten.

Apart from these two, you can rest assured that all of our teas are gluten-free. We pride ourselves in offering single-ingredient teas and blends that are as natural as possible, made without any sweeteners, preservatives or added flavoring.

We take your health seriously at Buddha Teas, and want to be sure that we minimize any potential risks to your health. We carefully clean all our tea equipment after running any teas known to contain gluten.

First, we use compressed air to blow out any dust and loose material from the machines. Once that’s finished, all surfaces are wiped down with isopropyl alcohol, including the floors and walls of the entire room. This gives the best possible chance of eliminating cross-contamination, and is a process we are careful to follow to the letter.

We also strive to remain gluten-free with our packaging. Our tea bags are heat-sealed together rather than glued, so you’ll never have to worry about gluten in the bags themselves. It’s our promise to you that we’ll always do our best to provide you with the healthiest and safest tea possible, no matter what steps we need to take.
